Installation and installation materials Wood decking can be laid on any surface: gravel, grass, sand, soil, cement, etc. Before installing the decking, it is important to level the surface as best as possible and create an even slope (approx. 1 cm per metre) so that the water can drain. If it is impossible to level the surface completely, special plastic or stainless steel levelling supports (shown in the picture) can be used to level the surface down to the millimetre, while also allowing the water to drain easily and making space for any installations. The deck boards are first transversely connected using joists made from the same or an equivalent wood and of the same or larger dimensions than the top boards.
1. Installation using clips:
Decking is most often installed using high-quality PA clips (shown in the picture) with a 10% glass fibre content for reinforcement. Installation using clips is quick and easy and ensures a more elegant look, as there are no visible screws. Clips can be used to install the more stable wood types: teak, cumaru, ipe and itauba.
2. Installation with visible screws:
The deck boards are first transversely connected using joists made from the same or an equivalent wood and of the same or larger dimensions than the top boards. The boards should be laid 5 to 7 mm apart to allow water drainage and the distance between the joists should be 40 to 55 cm. Use stainless steel to fix the boards. Each board should be fixed with two screws, taking care not to place the screws too close to the edge. An exotic wood should always be used for the joists. If you do not intend to install the wood immediately, store it in a suitable area, packaged and protected from the sun. Protect the ends of the deck boards with wax (beeswax or regular candle wax), If the boards are fixed with screws from the bottom (invisible fixing), each board must be additionally fixed from the top with a screw in each corner. If a board is raised slightly, it should be fixed using additional screws. Deck boards longer than 2 metres are normally slightly curved and should be levelled using an appropriate tool. Since exotic wood is very hard and dense, holes need to be pre-drilled for the screws (3 mm in the joists and 5 mm in the boards). For aesthetic reasons, it is recommended to bevel the edges of the boards.
